COMMON QUESTIONS
The questions everyone asks first
Do I need to register for GST?
Compulsory once turnover hits $60,000 in any 12-month period. Below that, it's optional, voluntary registration helps with startup costs or if your clients are GST-registered.
How much should I set aside for tax?
Start with 30–33% of gross income, covering income tax and ACC. Adjust after your first return when you know your actual effective rate.
What's provisional tax?
If you owe more than $5,000 in residual income tax, you prepay estimated tax the next year in 2–3 instalments. It's not extra, just early payment.
What records do I need to keep?
Invoices, receipts, bank statements, contracts, tax returns for 7 years. Digital is fine.
